You can take care of your home and family, but what about the dirt and waste you dispose of down the toilet? Did you know that regular toilets aren't meant for flushing cotton swabs, paper towels, or feminine products?

What do you do if a clog happens or damage occurs to your home? You need a cleanup service that can go beyond the drain! Metro Septic Pumping is here to help with all your septic pumping needs.

What Not To Flush

Most people know that they shouldn't flush food down the toilet. However, how many of us know what happens in our septic systems?

The good news is you don't need to know how it works to keep it functioning well. You just need to be aware of what not to flush down the toilet. Septic systems are designed to break down waste, but it's not a good idea to put anything into them that can't be broken down. After all, your septic system is designed to take care of human waste and toilet paper, but not much else.

Here are some things you should never flush if you have a septic system:

  • Cigarette butts. These don't biodegrade, so they can clog pipes and cause problems for the septic tank.
  • Feminine hygiene products. These also don't biodegrade and can clog pipes and the septic tank. Even though tampons are designed to be flushed down the toilet, they don't dissolve easily and can cause a clog in your drain field that will require a professional plumber to fix.
  • Diapers. These are bad for both septic tanks and sewer systems because they don't break down quickly enough, causing backups in both types of plumbing.
  • Baby wipes. Despite some packaging claims, these don't break down easily and can wreak havoc on your plumbing.
  • Dental floss. Dental floss is so strong, and it can easily get wrapped around your pump's impeller, causing it to seize up. It's also very thin, so it's hard for your septic tank bacteria to break down.
  • Hairbrushes or other items with plastic handles or bristles. These can tangle up in the septic tank, get stuck in drains, and cause backups.
  • Cotton swabs and balls. Because of their size, even a tiny amount of cotton balls or swabs can create severe problems with your septic system. And, they don't dissolve in water either!
  • Disposable Wipes: These are labeled "flushable," which doesn't mean they are, and they don't dissolve and can cause a significant clog in your septic system or sewer line.
  • Coffee Grounds: The sludge at the bottom of your septic tank is supposed to trap solid waste and prevent it from clogging your drain field. Coffee grounds can stick to the sludge and make this impossible, causing an expensive mess.
  • Paper towels, tissues, and napkins. These items are not biodegradable and can clog up your pipes, and they won't break down like toilet paper and could cause significant backups.

Inspect Your Septic

A septic system is a very simple yet essential part of your home. Septic systems are used in residential areas that are not connected to a sewer. They are underground tanks that hold sewage and convert it into water, methane gas, and solids. The methane gas is released into the air, and the water and solids filter back into the ground. If your system is not functioning correctly, you can have a lot of repairs on your hands. Septic tank pumping is essential for the healthy functioning of your septic system.

Many things can cause problems for your septic system, including tree roots, pumping too often or not often enough, or overusing garbage disposals. You must learn to inspect your septic system regularly to keep it working correctly. Here are some tips on how to inspect your septic system:

Have Your System Inspected Regularly – Have a professional inspect and pump out your septic tank every three years. This will prevent problems from occurring before they happen.

Eww, what's that smell? Can't flush that? Don't use your septic!

85% of all sewage system failures result from items placed down the drain or toilet that are not biodegradable.

If your drain is running slow, don't use harsh chemicals to clear the pipes. Metro Septic Pumping is a septic tank company that specializes in drain cleaning and septic inspections. Contact us today.
