Keeping your drains clean doesn't take a rocket scientist. A little knowledge and the will to keep drains clear will save you from septic tank pumping. Some of us have such busy lifestyles that we often neglect our drains or forget about them. Metro Septic Pumping is a septic tank company and can help when you cannot clean your drains yourself and need a septic tank company.

Clogged drains can end up costing you way more than you might imagine. You're likely familiar with the sinking feeling when you realize your shower is backing up into your bathtub, or worse yet — cascading down out of your bathroom and flooding the hallway.

Drain Screen

The first step to keeping your drains clean is to understand better what is going down your drain. The second step is to practice preventative maintenance with a drain screen. A drain screen, more commonly known as a sink strainer, can stop 99% of hair and debris from entering the main drain line. This step will save you time and money in the long run by avoiding expensive plumbing bills due to clogged drains.

Remove Hair and Other Debris Regularly

It's essential to remove debris from your drains regularly because it can prevent clogs and slow draining water. If you have hair in the shower drain, it can accumulate over time and cause a blockage. Try using a drain strainer to catch hair before it becomes a problem. If you already have a clog in your shower, try removing it with a plunger before resorting to chemicals or calling a professional.

Keep Drains Dry

Keep drains dry by plugging them when they are not in use. It is not good to put drain cleaners in the sink, and the chemicals will damage your pipes. Remember that water is one of the things that help bacteria and molds grow. So, if you want to prevent such things from growing in your beautiful kitchen or bathroom sink, then keep it dry. If you have a dishwasher, use it instead of washing your dishes by hand. Instead of wiping those dishes with a wet rag, you can also use paper towels.

Clean Drains Naturally

Drain cleaners are really harsh chemicals that can be very difficult on your pipes and even on you. Why not try to clean your drains naturally first?

Use a solution of vinegar, baking soda, and hot water. Pour the hot water down your drain to soften the clog, then pour in 1/2 cup of baking soda. Follow that with one cup of white vinegar. Plug the drain and let it sit for several hours. Then flush with hot water.

Use a homemade drain cleaner made from borax and lemon juice, which is less caustic than other cleaners. Pour one-half cup borax into the clogged drain, followed by one-half cup lemon juice, then cover with a rag or drain plug. Let it sit overnight, then flush with hot water in the morning.

Use boiling water to clear out grease buildup and soap scum: Hot water can help clear debris from your pipes; however, this may not be enough to do the trick if the piping is old or rusty.

Pour boiling water over a pile of baking soda: Baking soda can act as an abrasive when mixed with hot water and can help remove debris from the sides of your pipes.

Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaners

Avoid using chemical cleaners in your drains. Although they may work, these products can damage or corrode your pipes and cause more problems in the future. Not only that, but certain chemicals can be dangerous if you don't use them properly.
